Travelling to Petersham Nurseries Information

Please visit us by walking, cycling or public transport wherever and whenever possible…

Petersham Nurseries, as you may well be aware, is uniquely located, adjacent to Richmond Park and Petersham Meadows within London’s historic Thames landscape (Aracadia) which runs along the Thames from Teddington to Kew. It is an area of incredible beauty and sensitivity which we encourage visitors to explore responsibly.

As parking at Petersham Nurseries is extremely limited we would like to suggest visitors enjoy our exquisite location via a walk along the river or through the park, a quick trip across the river by ferry from Marble Hill Park or following one of the cycle routes from Richmond, Kingston or Teddington. There are extensive parking facilities nearby from which we can be reached after a short walk.

Walking & Cycling
Our location on the edge of the Thames Embankment and the national cycle route network makes walking and cycling to Petersham Nurseries safe, easy and enjoyable for adults and children.

When planning a walking route we have found the website http://www.walkit.com/ to be incredibly helpful.

Petersham Nurseries can also be reached by river using Hammertons Ferry which takes passengers across the river from Marble Hill Park to the river bank outside Ham House.

From 1 Feb - 31 Oct the ferry runs from Monday - Sunday including Public Holidays between 10 am and 6pm or dusk if earlier. During the winter the service is weekends only (1 Nov - 31 Jan 10.00until dusk). A single trips costs 60p per adult, 30p per child, bicycles 50p, first dog free then 10p per dog. After crossing the river, walk left along the river bank towards Richmond, turning right into River Lane, walk for 3 minutes and turn into the first narrow lane located on your left between the houses – this lane takes you to the entrance of Petersham Nurseries.

If you are travelling to us from further afield, you can also hop on a boat along the river. Turks, a local boating company along the Thames, run a scheduled boat service from April to mid-September, between Richmond, Kingston and Hampton Court. They land just before Richmond Bridge, and it is then a very pleasant 15 to 20 minute stroll along the River front and across Petersham Meadow to Petersham Nurseries. To view Turks boating timetable please visit http://www.turks.co.uk/scheduled_services.htm

Alternatively Westminster Passenger Service Association is another riverboat company that offers a scheduled service from Westminster to Kew, Richmond and Hampton Court. Daily sailings from Westminster Pier are operated between April and October, which dock at the landing station just before Richmond Bridge. Visit the WPSA website for more details: http://www.wpsa.co.uk/index.html

Weekday & Weekend parking
As parking on Church Lane leading up to Petersham Nurseries is extremely limited, we are trying to encourage people to leave their cars at home where possible.

On the 23rd July, we were finally granted Permanent Planning Consent by Richmond Council continue to operate as a garden centre with cafe. This consent remains conditional upon our ability to demonstrate continued reductions in the number of visitors who travel to us by car.

To this end, we have had no choice but to reduce the number of car parking spaces available in Church Lane. While we appreciate that this may seem unnecessary, we hope that you will understand that we are in a difficult position and simply wish to preserve both the garden centre and cafe.

Weekday Parking
For those who are unable to travel to us by alternative means; there is very limited parking on Church Lane, the lane way leading from Petersham Road to the nurseries’ gates. We would seek to reserve these spaces for the less able and for those who travel together in one car (car sharers).

Alternative parking is available in Richmond town centre at Paradise Road multi-storey, Waitrose, The Quadrant, Richmond Riverside, Water Lane & Richmond Green.

Weekend Parking at The Russell School, Petersham
During weekends parking for Petersham Nurseries’ customers will be available at The Russell School (less than a 5 minute walk from the Nurseries, see directions below).

This initiative is part of Petersham Nurseries` `adopt-a-school` programme, which will help the school develop its gardening and cooking projects.

Parking at The Russell: Saturday & Sunday only ~ 12.00am to 4.30pm
(All cars must be removed from the site at 4.30pm and no access can be given to the grounds after this time).

NB. We have no choice but introduce a small charge of £3.75 per vehicle. Regular customers will be aware that we have been renting this space from The Russell School for the last two years – unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, the school has had no choice but to significantly increase the hire charge to us. We have kept the price as low as we can and hope that you will continue to use this service. For your convenience, the parking charge will be added to your luncheon bill.

Directions from The Russell School to Petersham Nurseries
1. Walk from the car park back up to the entrance on the main Petersham Road
2. Turn left following the main road until you reach River Lane - a road leading off to your left.
3. Walk a quarter of the way down River Lane, looking out for a walled laneway on your right-hand side - sign posted to Ham/ Richmond.
4. Continue down the little walled lane way until you reach our main gate.

Local delivery & collection service
A delivery service is available on Thursday mornings for local residents (from £10.00 depending on distance and the nature of the goods). A collection point also exists outside the entrance to the nurseries for customers who have not been able to park nearby and who have travelled on foot, cycle or public transport and who need to return to collect items. Lastly a courier service operates for those living further afield (prices depend on distance and volume of goods). Please contact us for more details on 020 8940 5230.
